The multimedia filter is a vessel used to reduce the suspended solids in water. Typically, the filter consists of multiple layers of granules/filter media placed on a perforated plate through which the water percolates, whereas the solid impurities are trapped. The perforated plate holds the weight of the filter layers and the water above the plate. The plate is welded from the top and bottom to the shell and head. Also, it is supported from the bottom by an array of circular pipes, which transfer the load to the bottom of the shell. This support arrangement enables the weight of the plate and filter media to be transferred uniformly to the shell. The FE analysis is performed to validate the design of the perforated plate and the support arrangement. The strength of the plate is reduced due to the perforations; at the same time, the deflection due to self-weight is also reduced. To evaluate the effect due to the perforations on the plate's strength, the perforated plate's actual geometry is modelled. The deflection of the plate is minimum due to the evenly distributed support arrangement. The stresses near the junctions of the perforated plate and the shell/head, as well as the pipe support and the shell, are evaluated as per the ASME Section VIII, Div. 2, Part 5 methodology.
Benchmark: The design of the perforated plate and its support arrangement minimizes the stresses generated in the shell and head.
